Southland Asian American Episcopalians say they are horrified but sadly not surprised at the March 17 murders of six Asian American women and two others in three Atlanta-area massage parlors – killings they believe were racially motivated. The Rev. Yein Kim, rector of St. Alban’s Church in Westwood, who was targeted by hate speech last […]

Southland Episcopalians, along with dioceses and congregations across The Episcopal Church, gathered virtually on Saturday, March 13, 2021, to commemorate the life and witness of Massachusetts Bishop Suffragan Barbara Clementine Harris, on the one-year anniversary of her death. The irrepressible, no-holds-barred, gravelly-voiced, cigarette-smoking Harris – the first woman ordained a bishop in The Episcopal Church […]
Interfaith collaborations, digital discipleship, returning to in-person worship, and finances dominated the March 11 virtual meeting of Diocesan Council. Treasurer Andy Tomat reported that half of the 90 parishes in the diocese have turned in mission share fund (MSF) pledges for 2021. From Montecito to Big Bear, from Tustin to Highland Park, church construction projects have persisted, even in the time of pandemic. These words injure LGBTQ+ people and all who advocate for justice and equity for all children of God. The magnitude of their pain cannot be overestimated. May God’s healing power comfort each person […]

Honesty is a recurring refrain in the lyrics, music and life of Grace Semler Baldridge, who recently landed briefly at the top spot on the Christian music chart but wasn’t entirely sure how a queer Episcopal preacher’s kid and recent member of the St. Aidan’s, Malibu, vestry arrived there. “I do my songwriting while walking […]
Some Southland Episcopal congregations are saying, “absolutely, yes, in my backyard” and are working through partnerships to develop affordable senior housing on their underused land. In Placentia, the Church of the Blessed Sacrament’s Santa Angelina Senior Apartments project will add 64 apartments plus a community center and manager’s unit, along with other campus improvements, according […]
Andrew Kilkenny, 34, knelt on ground softened by pine needles outside St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in Claremont, the third stop of a drive-through, pandemic-inspired interactive Stations of the Cross commemorating the last hours of Jesus’ life. At Station 3, visitors tap on a pre-recorded audio reflection and are invited to leave their cars and take […]
The Rev. Jeanette Repp, rector of St. Peter’s Church, San Pedro since 2010, has inspired her parishioners and others to engage in imaginative and effective projects serving their community. She now will bring that cooperative spirit and zeal for service to her new role as dean of Deanery 8, which comprises 16 congregations in the […]
Whether feeding and offering showers to Tustin-area homeless persons or supporting refugees and asylees, the Rev. Laura Siriani’s approach is: “We’re all in this together. Once you know their story it becomes real and you recognize we’re the same people, just different circumstances.” Siriani brings that conviction […]
