PACIFIC PALISADES: Director of Children's Formation and Youth Ministry
St. Matthew's Episcopal Parish, a large Diocese of Los Angeles parish  in the Pacific Palisades community is seeking a full time minister of  formation to work with our children(pre-school-5th grade) and youth(6th grade-age 18), with summer duties at our large Day Camp working with adult and young adult counselors. You will be joining a  program staff of three parish priests, a priest who serves as school minister, a deacon and a committed and  frankly, demanding group of lay ministers.
There is a parish school of 350 students from pre-school through 8th grade of which 80% are from parish families which is a real opportunity for an enterprising staff person. This is a fairly young parish with many young and growing families. Counting the school children, there are potentially over  400 children and youth who are connected to the parish. At present, we get around 60 in church school on a good day, and a dozen at our newly established youth group. There is lots of room for growth. Close  cooperation with the School Minister will be needed in working with chapels, service  learning and some religious instruction.
There are some unique needs that are a part of our vision for our youth and children.
     1. We are instituting The Godly Play curriculum this fall. We are seeking candidates with experience in and a commitment to the theology and methodology of Godly Play which respects the innate creativity and receptivity of children to The Holy One.
     2. Our youth ministry program has, as so many, fallen short of what we would like. The person we seek needs to be passionate about working with youth and their families. We seek someone who would find going to parish school athletic, dramatic and academic events a joy, not a burden. We seek a person who will engage deeply in the lives of the youth and children and their families. We are looking for someone with a track record of effective ministry with youth.
     3. We seek a person who is comfortable with the technology which is now the vernacular for our children and youth. (It would be a real plus if the candidate would be comfortable being the webmaster of our parish website which is in dire need of tending).
     4. It would be a plus if the candidates was excited about being an Episcopalian and knowledgeable about what it means to be an Anglican in this time and place.
     5. We are seeking a team player who understands that "other tasks as assigned" simply means that we are a team doing ministry. Working closely with our Family Ministries Commission will give you strong and committed colleagues who care deeply about children and youth and will help implement programs.
     6. We are seeking a person who knows that if they are doing ministry rather than equipping others to do ministry, they are probably heading down the wrong path.
     7. We are seeking someone comfortable with creating and carrying out our Book of Common Prayer worship with children and youth.
     8. We are seeking someone who can craft and carry out an effective confirmation program for youth and experience with confirmation programs are a plus.
     9.  We are looking for some one who is playful enough to enjoy our large, six week summer Day Camp with hundreds of children and young adult and high school age counselors who, while supervised by a professional adult leadership team, need the support and guidance of a caring youth and children’s educator.
We are hoping to fill this position this fall. We are doing a VERY slimmed down national search for the very best person. We are  receiving applications or nominations immediately through June 19 and hope to bring several finalists in for interviews this summer.
The salary, benefits, facilities and working conditions are attractive as is  this community in a canyon a mile from the Pacific beaches, in the midst of the Santa Monica mountain hiking trails close to all the excitement and activity of Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
Please send your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in this position--and tip your cards--tell us who you are and what God is calling you to do and to be. Please email your materials to the Rev. Howard Anderson, rector, at
handerson@stmatthews.com(Posted June 3)
